Introduction

The 2016 Gold Coast City Council election was held on March 19, 2016, to elect councillors to the Gold Coast City Council. The election was held concurrently with the Queensland local government elections.

Candidates

A total of 98 candidates contested the election, including 11 incumbent councillors. The candidates represented a variety of political parties and independent groups.

Voter Turnout

The voter turnout for the 2016 Gold Coast City Council election was 34.7%, slightly higher than the 31.5% turnout in the 2012 election. A total of 163,261 votes were cast.

Results

The results of the 2016 Gold Coast City Council election saw the incumbent mayor Tom Tate re-elected with a comfortable majority. The conservative Liberal National Party (LNP) also retained its majority on the council, winning 11 of the 15 divisions.

Mayor

Tom Tate was re-elected as the mayor of the Gold Coast, winning 58.62% of the vote. Tate was first elected as mayor in 2012 and has overseen a number of major infrastructure projects during his time in office, including the Gold Coast Light Rail.

Councillors

The LNP won 11 of the 15 divisions, giving them a comfortable majority on the council. The remaining four divisions were won by independent candidates. The council was made up of the following councillors:
